Department of Agricultural Marketing, West Bengal
The Department of Agricultural Marketing in West Bengal is a constitutional body specified by the Constitution of the State of West Bengal.
It oversees all matters relating to the marketing of agriculture as an autonomous body of the State of West Bengal. Note that agricultural marketing is a process that refers to various institutions and financial policies.
There are three agencies under the State Agricultural Marketing Department, the Directorate of Agricultural Marketing, the West Bengal State Agricultural Marketing Board, and the West Bengal Agri Marketing Corporation Limited.
Directorate of Agricultural Marketing
The Department of Agricultural Marketing is the central office of all consumer affairs departments. As well as deciding on marketing. This company collects daily market prices and collects production information from the market.
In addition, the department keeps an eye on the market price dynamics and they regularly upload that information to AGMARKNET.
The department also issues licenses for all cold storage in the state under the West Bengal Cold Storage (Licensing and Regulation) Act, 1986.)
West Bengal State Agricultural Marketing Board
The State Agricultural Marketing Board was constituted in accordance with Section 37 of the West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) Act, 1982. The responsibility of this board is to coordinate, maintain, orient, and regulate the activities of the regulated market committees.
Keeping in view the interests of the farmers, various regulated market committees give technical approval to various projects. This board is creating farmer markets.
Apart from this, the board also keeps an eye on the roads and market infrastructure connecting various markets.
By regrouping and consolidating all the old regulated market committees, 21 district-level regulated market committees and 1 subdivision-level regulated market committee have been formed.
With the notification of the West Bengal Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation) (Amendment) Act 2018, marketing has become much easier among farmers and buyers.
West Bengal Agri Marketing Corporation Limited
West Bengal Agri Marketing Corporation Limited was formed in compliance with the Indian Companies Act.
The organization has started a marketing program with Bidhan Chandra Agricultural University and farmers’ groups to popularize Govindabhog and Tulaipanji rice in India and abroad under the Bangakrishisri brand.
Also, fragrant rice such as Govindbhog, Tulaipanji, Kalununiya, Kataribhog, Radhatilak, and Randhunipagal has started a promotional drive for rice.
The company has also started the Sufal Bangla project for administrative facilities and structural revision. In the Kharif season of 2016-17, this organization collected paddy from Bankura and Hooghly districts through the regulated market committee.
So far 5945.312 metric tons of paddy have been procured from 1129 farmers who have paid a minimum support price of Rs. 1550 per quintal to their bank.
