Before the vote, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a new Scheme. She announced the ‘Chokher Alo Scheme’ at a virtual press conference from Navanna Sabhaghar on 5th January.
She assured that the people of the state would get free treatment for eye-related problems like cataracts, power, etc. The Scheme will be launched in state panchayats and municipalities from the next day.
Besides, the Medical Trauma Care Center was inaugurated in North Bengal on this day. In the first phase, work on the Scheme will start from the day. The Scheme will be launched in 1200-gram panchayats and 120 primary health centers in the city.

All the gram panchayats and municipalities will be brought under this Scheme step by step. Health and eye care will be free for all in the state by 2025.
What is the Chokher Alo Scheme 2024?
Through this Scheme, cataract surgery will be performed on 2 million senior citizens across the state completely free of cost in the next 5 years. The state government has decided that more than eight lakh of them will be given free spectacles.
But this Scheme is not just for adults. The solution to the eye problems of any child from adults to newborns will also be free. Besides, she announced that under this Scheme, the state government will also provide free spectacles to 8 lakh 25 thousand elderly people. Besides, students of all schools will get free eye check-ups and 4 lakh students will get spectacles.
All Anganwadi Centers will also provide eye check-ups and necessary treatment to the children. Starting the work will be started in 1200 panchayats and several municipalities across the state which will continue for the next 5 years.

Benefits of the Chokher Alo Scheme
Completely free cataract surgery in adults. Cataract surgery will be performed on 2 million people in the state completely free of cost in the next 5 years.
Free spectacles will be provided for the poor. 8 lakh 25 thousand glasses will be distributed free of cost.
Free eye examination for government school students. Free glasses will be provided if required. A total of 4 lakh students will get free spectacles.
Anganwari center will also have eye examinations for children.

Who can apply for the Chokher Alo Scheme?
Firstly, only those citizens who live in West Bengal can apply for this Scheme.
Secondly, in order to apply for this Scheme, one must have a history of ophthalmology before the scholarship.
Thirdly, the person has to pass a certain age limit to apply for this scheme. Although the scheme is only for senior citizens, at present the necessary eye services are provided for the students.

The Choker Alo Scheme of the West Bengal government is a new Scheme. So that has not yet launched any online web portal the Scheme. So at present, it is not possible to apply online for the Scheme.
